まもなく国際女性デーである。そこで、今回はパトリシアとサンディのデュオ、Emma’s Revolutionのファースト・アルバム《one》から“bound for freedom”を紹介しよう。「エマの革命」…、このユニット名は、おそらくリトアニア生まれのアメリカ人、フェミニストであり、アナーキストでもあったエマ・ゴールドマン（1869～1940年）に由来するのだろう。エマ・ゴールドマンが、現代のアメリカでどのような評価を受けているのか、確かめていないのだが、パトリシアとサンディの二人が、アメリカ近現代史の知識を持ち、権力に対する批判的視座を持つ人物であることが、そのネーミングからもわかる。
2003年1月17日、氷点下10度にまで冷え込んだワシントンDCで、3日間にわたるイラク戦争に反対する大規模な集会が始まった。その寒空の下、ファラガット・スクエアで“bound for freedom”を熱唱していた二人。この歌詞からは、社会を変えよう、もっと良くしよう、ひとりひとりがその一員になろうという呼びかけが聞こえる。今なお世界中で求められるこのメッセージを、あなたにも受けとめてほしい。

1934年、ロイド・ストーン（1912～93年）は国際平和の歌として、「フィンランディア」のメロディに、“This is my song”という題で新たな歌詞をつけて発表した。なお、3番以降は、その内容から、メソジストの神学者ジョージア・ハークネス（1891～1974年）がつけ加えたものではないかと推測されている。プロテスト・フォークのファースト・レディとして、反戦と非暴力を訴え続けているジョーン・バエズは、自身のアルバム《Bowery Songs》の1曲目にこの歌を置いているくらいだ。
ビアフラ戦争、ビアフラ難民という言葉を記憶しておいでだろうか。1967年、ナイジェリア南東部のビアフラ地区は、ナイジェリアからの独立を目指し、70年に屈するまで戦い抜いた。自分たちの国歌として“Land of the Rising Sun”を用いたのだが、そのメロディもまた、シベリウスの「フィンランディア」だったのである。

私の手元には英語の讃美歌集が二種類あり、“Be Still, My Soul”は、そのどちらにも含まれている。この歌詞が、カタリーナ・フォン・シュレーゲルによる“Stille, mein Wille! Dein Jesus hilft siegen”の英語訳であるのは、ほぼ間違いなかろう。しかし、一冊の方には、さらに“A Christian Home”という題で、同じ曲が掲載されていた。また、ネットでは“We Rest on Thee”なる讃美歌も見つかる。これらの歌詞は、“Be Still, My Soul”とはかなり違っている。
日本で歌われている同曲の多くは、日本基督教団『讃美歌』の第298番「やすかれ、わがこころよ」の歌詞を踏襲しているようだ。以下の讃美歌集に収録されているものを比較したが、どれも同じであった。詩の内容から、“Stille, mein Wille! Dein Jesus hilft siegen”または“Be Still, My Soul”からの翻訳であろう。
日本福音連盟の『聖歌』第309番（総合版では294番になっている）の日本語歌詞も、内容から推測するに、これも“Stille, mein Wille! Dein Jesus hilft siegen”ないし“Be Still, My Soul”からの翻訳のように思われる。やや文語調なので、今の若い人にはわかりづらいかもしれないが、讃美歌としては、私の世代にはむしろしっくりくるような気がする。
やや趣を異にするのが、セブンスデー・アドベンチスト教団『希望の讃美歌』に収録されたものと、聖公会の『聖歌集』にあるものだ。特に後者は、歌詞からわかるとおり、葬送の儀で歌われるものである。たしかに、人生の終末まで信仰心を持って試練に耐えよ。さすれば永遠の主が受け入れてくれるという内容なのだが、ドイツ語の“Stille, mein Wille! Dein Jesus hilft siegen”を作詞したカタリーナ・フォン・シュレーゲルは、葬送を念頭にしていたとは思われないので、私としてはなんとなく違和感があるのだが、どうであろうか。
